In today’s polarized climate, communicating in healthcare isn’t just about accuracy—it’s about carefully and strategically navigating values, fears, and politics.
Whether you're addressing vaccines, reproductive care, equity, or access, the stakes are high. So how can healthcare organizations stay mission-driven and clear, without getting swept into the storm?
Here’s what I advise:
1. Anchor in purpose. Remind audiences why you exist—It’s all about patients, outcomes, and trust. Messaging that starts from shared values is harder to attack or weaponize.
2. Plan for polarization – today it is nearly inevitable. Don’t wait for backlash to craft your response. Be prepared. Build scenarios in advance, and make sure leadership understands the risks and responsibilities of taking (or not taking) a stand.
3. Speak human. Avoid overly sanitized language. Speaking with clarity, compassion, and honesty can build bridges—even when people disagree.
Now more than ever, healthcare organizations must strike the balance between courage and care in their communications.
